Mr. Tee, the Lao government agriculture extension worker in the Laven village of Houei Kong (XB 6473, L-56), inspects coffee beans before they are harvested in Attapu Province. The coffee is usually ready for harvest in March and is an important cash crop for the local growers. Coffee growing was introduced during the French colonial period to the Boloven Plateau because of the ideal climatic and soil growing conditions. Generally, the coffee farming is done by the Laven, although some Nyaheun families near Houei Kong do it too.
