Ayer Collection are brought together in this database to document interactions between American Indians and Europeans from their earliest contact, through the American Civil War, right up to the civil rights movement of the mid-twentieth century. It includes manuscripts, artwork, and rare printed books dating from the earliest contact with European settlers up to the mid-twentieth century. Documentation includes photographs, newspapers, dictionaries and vocabulary translations, captivity narratives, memoirs, government treaties, and documentation from the Bureau of Indian Affairs.
