The Environmental and Societal Impacts Group conducts integrated research on the societal implications of atmospheric and related environmental processes. ESIG's mission is to conduct a coordinated research and outreach program on the societal implications of atmospheric and related environmental processes, in order to build an improved base of knowledge for anticipating and responding to atmospheric science-related issues. This mission is closely tied to NSF's strategic goal to "promote the discovery, integration, dissemination, and employment of new knowledge in service to society." ESIG's mission entails conducting original research on a broad array of issues relating to interactions among society, the atmosphere and natural systems. ESIG conducts both fundamental and problem-focused research. The research program includes analyses of the behavior of connected natural and social systems. Much of ESIG's research is problem-focused in that it contributes to the analysis of policy or decision-making problems. In addition to performing original research, ESIG integrates and disseminates new knowledge through its many outreach activities. ESIG's outreach program emphasizes enhancing the usability of atmospheric and related science information.
