Luther's defense of his ordaining his friend and long-time supporter, Nikolaus von Amsdorff, as Bishop of Naumburg. The cathedral chapter had originally elected Julius von Pflug, moderate Catholic, in January, 1541, but Pflug waited a year for imperial approval, before formally accepting. In the meantime, Elector John Frederick of Saxony appointed von Amsdorf, who then served as bishop until 1547, when after the elector's defeat in the Schmalkald War, Pflug became bishop.
