Five characters, each representing different centuries and social backgrounds, journey from Kyoto, the old capital of Japan to the modern capital, Tokyo. They follow the Nakasendo, the ancient road between the two cities which passes through some of the most remarkable places in Japan. On the way, the group discusses the history, culture, etiquette, religion and social structure of Japan throughout the ages.
