The premise that identity politics concern with gender, religion, race and nation has replaced the issue of class as the central focus of politics around the world is the starting point for this collection of essays. It is of particular interest because many of the 13 case studies of gender politics are of Muslim or South Asian countries, where the feminist agenda often clashes head-on with the local religious or nationalist agenda and where the reassertion of cultural identities against the West often comes at the expense of women. This book is valuable for describing these clashes in detail; it would have been much better, however, had it acknowledged more forthrightly the internal contradiction between feminism and opposition to the imperialism of universal Western values. from Foreign Affairs (May/ June 1994).
