Endangered species disappear at the rate of 100 species a day, mostly due to habitat destruction, pollution, disease and poaching. Zoo scientists have started a plan of action to increase populations of endangered species using reproductive technology. Dr. Betsy Dresser of the Cincinnati Zoo works to create a test tube baby of the leopard cat that can be implanted in the ordinary house cat as a surrogate mother. Zoos are also working cooperatively in the Species Survival Plan, a database of genealogical information of animals used to match up animals for breeding programs. The gorilla is cited as an example of how the Plan involves the study of behavior to maximize the likelihood of successful breeding. Primate species briefly shown include the gorilla, gibbon, langur, orangutan, lemur, proboscis monkey and golden lion tamarin.
