Prepared by the Research Animal Resources Center at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, this video reviews the potential threat to monkey handlers of the herpes B virus. Moderator Peter Thorsen, Research Animal Veterinarian, leads a discussion with Dr. Dennis Maki, Head, Section of Infectious Diseases, UW Medical School and Lorna Will, Nurse Specialist and Coordinator for the Animal Worker Health Program. Among the topics covered are (1) an overview of the herpes group with special reference to herpes B, (2) numbers of monkeys infected with the herpes B virus, (3) what to do if bitten or scratched, (4) infectibility from exposure to non-living tissue, and (5) ways to prevent exposure. Footage of rhesus monkeys (Macaca mulatta) from the Wisconsin Regional Primate Research Center is included.
