Many species of plants and animals, some yet undiscovered, are threatened with extinction because of the destruction of the tropical forests of Amazonia in Brazil. Burning forests for farm land and using the land for growing coca plants have caused much of the destruction. Land speculation and gold mining have led to pollution and the destruction of rain forests in Brazil and Costa Rica. The best hope for the continued existence of the rain forest is to provide a market for the food and fiber materials the forest can provide. Primates shown include squirrel monkey (Saimiri), howler (Alouatta), uakari (Cacajao), tamarin, spider monkey, and capuchin. Includes interviews with Russell Mittermaier and Mark Plotkin of Conservation International.
