Abstract: In his January 1987 interviews with Laura Smail, Art Hove discussed the inner workings of the University of Wisconsin's administration during his four decades of service there from the 1960s to the 1990s. After providing some background to his work at UW, he discussed in detail the relationship between several actors in the administration of Madison and the UW-System, including Cyrena Pondrom, Edwin Young, Bryant Kearl, Irving Shain, and Robert O'Neil, as well as UW's relationship with the state of Wisconsin. He explained some of the implications of the 1973 merger of the UW and WSU campuses into a single system, as well as how it was influenced by the wider contexts of higher education in the 1970s and beyond. This interview was conducted for inclusion in the University of Wisconsin-Madison Archives Oral History Project.
