A program commemorating the 100th anniversary of the National Zoological Park in Washington, D.C. Zoo director Michael Robinson's vision of a biopark where visitors can better explore their relationship with nature is contrasted with past and present concepts of what a zoo should be. The importance of these changing ideas is highlighted with the story of Hercules, a 27 year old male gorilla who, after years of living in a solitary cage, is able to mate with Zakula, a female from the Pittsburgh Zoo. Also featured is the innovative golden lion tamarin program which hopes to return someday the endangered zoo-raised tamarins to their native Brazilian rainforest home.
