The Lincoln Park Zoo has housed lowland gorillas since the obtaining of the male, Bushman, in 1931. In 1990, there are 22 animals in three family groups. This program looks at the care that the gorillas receive from the zoo staff. The gorillas' environment is designed to provide stimulation and exercise and imitate natural habitat with ropes and steel climbing trees to promote social development and interaction between gorillas. The gorillas receive a nutritious diet and are encouraged to forage for their food. Their living areas are cleaned daily, and new straw is provided regularly. The zoo hospital staff provide vaccinations and are prepared to deal with many medical situations, including surgery. Special care is given to infants born in the zoo, where staff pay special attention to the first 72 hours of a baby gorillas life.
