A collection of papers, many of them copied from originals, relating to Superior and dealing with the area's history, including material on the fur trade, Indian trails, harbor, parks, schools, prisons, ethnic groups, aviation, housing, and churches. Present in original form are journals of area missionaries, surveyors, and early residents such as Sherman Hall, Thomas Clark, Charles Dwight Felt, and Hiram Hayes; topical essays by William E. Culkin, J.D. Ensign, J.H. Darling, Norris C. Dickey, and Richmond Banks; and other items.
Additional similar papers, 1849-1942, available on microfilm, consist of material produced by several WPA Historic Records Survey projects which transcribed original local history materials, and reports and charts of a WPA project of the City Plan Commission which surveyed housing conditions. Included are papers by or concerning William George Cowell, the First Presbyterian Church, Harry Holder Grace, Mrs. Hiram Hayes (diaries from her Civil War visit to her husband serving with U.S. forces in Virginia), William Higgins, and August H. Zachau, and radio lectures (1935-36) by Superior State Teachers College faculty.
