- Finding aid. The Clerk of Circuit Courts has an index by plaintiff and defendant. Additionally, Dane Series 98, Plaintiff index docket books, can be used to look up the file drawer number needed to access the case files, 1861-circa 1950 (boxes 64-489, 492)

- Divorce case files through 1928 were removed from this series to form "Divorce Case Files," Dane Series 314.
- The divorce papers for William C. and Anna L. Wright (Frank Lloyd Wright's parents) are at the University of Wisconsin-Madison archives as accession number 2007/049.
- In 1977, the Dane County Circuit Court was split into two divisions: Civil and Family, and Criminal and Traffic. Post-1977 case files can be found in new series cataloged under these division names.
