The papers of Charles Newton Brown, a nineteenth-century Madison, Wisconsin lawyer and court commissioner; of his wife, Nellie Melvina Williams Brown, a high school teacher, and owner of rental properties in central Madison and the University of Wisconsin campus area; and of their son, Irving Henry Brown, a university professor of romance languages, author, and nationally-known authority on Romani (gypsies).

The Charles N. Brown papers (1890-1925) include genealogical forms and notes, correspondence and financial records relating to the Dane County Bar Association, Madison Literary Club, Madison Park and Pleasure Drive Association, and United Bond and Mortgage Company. Charles N. Brown's diaries and writings are also included.

The Irving Henry Brown papers consist of his diaries, drafts, copies, and reviews of his published writings on Romani, as well as poetry, essays and lecture notes, and miscellany. The Nellie Melvina Williams Brown papers include financial records concerning her rental properties, writings and notes mainly from her years at the university, and miscellaneous family and school activities records. General correspondence concerns Brown family genealogy, the courtship of Charles and Nellie, Irving Brown's marital problems, and activities of other family members.

The photographs include images of parks, roads, and lakes in the region of Madison, Wisconsin, circa 1890-1915, probably made by Charles N. Brown in conjunction with the Madison Park and Pleasure Drive Association. These images include views of Lake Mendota, Lake Monona, Lake Waubesa, the Yahara River area, Tenney Park, Henry Vilas Park, Brittingham Park, and scenic drives such as Lake Mendota Drive and Farwell Drive. Photographs of scenes of buildings and street views in Nassau, the Bahama Islands, 1885-1886, and monuments and cemeteries in Savannah, Georgia, 1898, are also included.
