Papers of John Sweet Donald, a Dane County, Wisconsin, farmer and agricultural expert who was a political figure in the Progressive movement. Donald served as assemblyman, 1903-1907; state senator, 1909-1913; and Wisconsin secretary of state, 1913-1917. The collection primarily documents his legislative career and interest in education, pure food legislation, and the development of a state highway system and Donald's World War I service in France with the Young Men's Christian Association (YWCA) and with the Army Education Corps as an instructor in agriculture. Later papers document his study and promotion of farm management programs for the United States Department of Agriculture and the University of Wisconsin and his development of a simplified system of farm accounting. Also included are records of Friends of Our Native Landscape, 1916-1948, and family correspondence, photographs, and movies.
