Papers of Orton, a Milwaukee lawyer and financier originally from New York. While working for a New York State bank, Orton organized financial and land deals with Milwaukee lawyer Allison Lewis and others, including James Kneeland of Wauwatosa, Wis., Orton's business relationships are well documented in the collection. Also included is extensive correspondence concerning the lawsuit between Orton and Josiah A. Noonan resulting from financial recriminations after the burning of the Humboldt and Menomonee Paper Mills; information on circumstances leading to disbarment proceedings against Orton; and letters from Wisconsin Supreme Court Chief Justice Edward G. Ryan which provide intimate details concerning the other justices. Correspondence with Isaac Sherman of Buffalo and New York City on the management of a lumber company; legal papers from a number of cases handled by Orton; and two account books are also included. Other correspondents include Judge Harlow S. Orton of Madison; David B. Frankenberger, Orton's partner at law and later professor at the University of Wisconsin, and Senator Angus Cameron and other Republicans.
