The first edition (Cincinnati, 1846) was compiled by James H. Perkins, based on a general plan by James R. Albach. The second edition (St. Louis, 1850) was revised and enlarged by John Mason Peck, again based on Albach's general plan. Albach himself revised and substantially enlarged this third edition.
