Grover Cleveland was the first US president to visit La Crosse. He arrived at the Cameron House Depot via train with his wife on October 10, 1887, and a 25-minute, horse-drawn carriage procession was held in downtown in front of a crowd of 15,000-20,000 people. The Clevelands were passing through the area as part of a railroad pleasure trip. They also stopped in Winona, MN, and Sparta, WI.
