Ronald Reagan visited La Crosse while running for president in 1976. During that visit, he went to the Stoddard Hotel and stopped at the hotel's La Crosse Club, as well as its Crystal Room. He also spoke at the annual banquet of the Mississippi Flyway Chapter of Ducks Unlimited Inc. at the Mary E. Sawyer Auditorium. In 1980, Reagan came to La Crosse as the Republican Party's presidential nominee and spoke at the Mary E. Sawyer Auditorium.
