Gillin, a student and later an associate of E. A. Ross, joined the staff of the University of Wisconsin in 1912; he became a professor of Sociology in 1915 and served as a Chairman of the Department from 1937 until his retirement in 1942. Professor Gillin published many books in the fields of sociology, poor relief and penology.
