The correspondence file is broken, only the periods 1926-1927 and 1950-1961 being fully represented. Scattered items appear for the intervening years, 1928-1950.The subject file contains scattered items from 1925, but the great bulk of the material is devoted to Bean's work as a consulting geologist, 1952-1961. Highway projects in New York, West Virginia, Ohio, Michigan, as well as Wisconsin, occupied much of Bean's last decade. Other projects carried him as far afield as Northern Canada. Bean also acted as an expert witness in many court cases. There are many geological survey maps in this collection. The unprocessed accession contains Alaska field notes.

- E. F. Bean (1882-1961) graduated from Iowa State Teachers College in 1905, received a B.A. in 1909 and M.A. in 1911 from the University of Wisconsin. He served as an instructor in Geology 1911-1915 and as an assistant professor 1915-1917. In 1916 he became Assistant State Geologist and rose to State Geologist in 1926 and held that position until his retirement in 1953.
