This Instructor Case Study is designed to help students at the undergraduate level think critically about how piracy impacted colonial North America socially, culturally, politically, and economically. By dissecting what kinds of colonial records exist that document the activities and influence of Atlantic world pirates and who produced those records, students will develop a more nuanced understanding about a complex, romanticized, and often misunderstood group of diverse people. The assignment teaches students how historians develop a research question, how to locate and analyze primary sources, and how to use their interpretation of the evidence to present their findings in an engaging video format.
