The seven selected volumes from this series are composed of correspondence between British representatives in China and the Law Officers in London from 1833-1876. Bound separately from the general correspondence represented in FO 17, they are here reunited with that series to allow researchers a more complete picture of the legal and judicial issues around the British presence in China. The subjects covered in these volumes range from piracy and shipping to property ownership and land rights, the creation of law courts, the rights of British subjects and companies, the responsibilities of consuls, and the treatment of criminals. These volumes have also been opened up to scholars with the use of Handwritten Text Recognition (HTR) technology, as well as item-level information manually transcribed from the Foreign Office Indexes in series FO 605.
