Rather than being a simple expression of occupation or income, class has historically been a morally, culturally, and intellectually loaded term which influenced every facet of ordinary life, from love, to schooling, to friendships, and manners. This case study focusses on three Mass Observation respondents' answers to a 1939 questionnaire on the 'class complex' to explore the invasive influence of hierarchical class structures in every day life. We will examine how they were influenced by and even enforced the social inequalities of the class superstructure in their decision-making, their judgments of others, and their own anxious self-identities.
