- Carson Gulley was born in 1897 in Arkansas. He began working at the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1926 and served as head chef from 1927 to 1954. He was one of the first African American instructors at the university, with his two-year chef training course. Gulley went on to have a radio show and publish cookbooks, in addition to hosting a television series with his wife, Beatrice Russey. Gulley is also known for his work for fair housing in the city of Madison, after he and his family struggled to find housing due to segregation. His testimonies to the Committee on Human Rights of the city council helped bring about the passage of Madison's Fair Housing Ordinance. Gulley died in 1962.
