Four experiments are summarized which constitute a series of investigations aimed at determining how lineal-inclination symbols should be used to encode information optimally on cathode ray tubes and similar displays in future air traffic control and related systems. An equal-discriminability scale of lineal inclination was constructed and validated in the first two studies; in addition, normative data were collected from a large number of subjects using the four alphabets specifically recommended. The second two investigations were concerned with (a) the effects of using different readout systems and (b) the effects of displaying the symbols in different visual surrounds.
