The present publication provides a general introduction to the work of the International Law Commission. It contains a historical outline of earlier initiatives aimed at the development and codification of international law, an overview of the organization, programme and methods of work of the Commission, and description of the various topics of international law considered by the Commission. An account is also given of the action taken by the General Assembly following the consideration of topics by the Commission, and of the results achieved by diplomatic conferences convened by the General Assembly to consider drafts prepared by the Commission or the General Assembly itself. Several annexes are appended, containing, for example, the text of the Commission's Statute, a list of present and former members, and the texts of multilateral conventions adopted by diplomatic conferences convened unde rthe auspices of the United Nations or the General Assembly itself, or the texts finalized by the Commission.
