Lars Wincentsen was born in 1893 in Manawa, Wisconsin; grew up in Fairchild and Merrillan, Wisconsin; and also lived in Aniwa, Suamico, and Rothschild, Wisconsin. He married Inez Ethel Mortenson with whom he raised two sons. Lars worked various jobs, including as a railroad lineman, a sailor in the U.S. Navy during World War I, a mill worker, and a garage owner.
