"Un padre ha piantato due alberi davanti alla sua casa, uno per ogni figlio. Il primo, un larice, è Luigi, duro e fragile, che in trentasette anni non se n'è mai andato dalla valle. Lui e Betta si sono innamorati facendo il bagno nelle pozze del fiume, tra le betulle bianche: ora non succede piú cosí di frequente, ma aspettano una bambina e nell'aria si sente il profumo di un nuovo inizio. Lui ha appena accettato un lavoro da forestale, lei viene dalla città e legge Karen Blixen. L'altro albero è un abete: Alfredo è il figlio minore, ombroso e resistente al gelo, irrequieto e attaccabrighe. Per non fare piú guai ha scelto di scappare lontano, in Canada, tra gli indiani tristi e i pozzi di petrolio. Ma adesso è tornato. Alfredo e Luigi in comune hanno due cose. La prima sta in un bicchiere. Oltre all'alcol però c'è la casa davanti a quei due alberi. Adesso che il padre se n'è andato, Alfredo è tornato in valle per liberarsi dei legami rimasti: lui non lo sa, ma quella stamberga da un giorno all'altro potrebbe valere una fortuna"--Dust jacket.

A father planted two trees in front of his house, one for each child. The first, a larch, is Luigi, hard and fragile, who in thirty-seven years has never left the valley. He and Betta fell in love while bathing in the river pools, among the white birches: now it doesn't happen so frequently, but they are expecting a little girl and in the air you can smell the scent of a new beginning. He just took a forestry job, she's from the city and reads Karen Blixen. The other tree is a fir: Alfredo is the youngest son, shady and resistant to frost, restless and troublesome. To avoid causing any more trouble, he chose to escape far away, to Canada, among the sad Indians and oil wells. But now he's back. Alfredo and Luigi have two things in common. The first is in a glass. In addition to alcohol, however, there is the house in front of those two trees. Now that his father is gone, Alfredo has returned to the valley to free himself from the remaining ties: he doesn't know it, but that hovel could be worth a fortune from one day to the next.
