The modernization of Mexico City characterized by the expansion of the main streets, the installation of public lighting, the implementation of sanitation policies and the constitution of public transport networks, among others, created the backdrop against which the department stores made their appearance. Located in the downtown streets of the city, the analysis presented here evidences the existence of a circuit of consumption that implied a relationship between buyers and the streets of the city embellished by its imposing buildings. This research focuses on the dynamics of consumption in the Mexican capital between 1891 and 1915, raised by the emergence of department stores. It is a journey through the different aspects that are part of the construction of a new tradition in the activity of buying and selling goods, mostly sumptuary. The commercial circuit based on the dynamics of the stores, the deployment of different advertising strategies, the times of fashion, the construction of the aesthetic sense and the world of work of the employees of these stores are topics address throughout these pages.
