"Maria Isabel Barreno, Maria Teresa Horta e Maria Velho da Costa escreveram Novas Cartas Portuguesas, uma das obras mais indecorosas da literatura portuguesa, tão inovadora quanto necessária num contexto histórico-cultural particularmente entorpecido. Nela as três escritoras desfloraram mitos, desaconchegaram leis de género e fizeram o escrutínio de assuntos da sociedade portuguesa da época (da condição da mulher portuguesa à Guerra Colonial). As três autoras ficaram conhecidas, nacional e internacionalmente, como as Três Marias, mas a aglutinação dos seus nomes não suprime as suas diferenças. Foram, aliás, as diferenças entre as três que levaram à criação de uma obra literária feminista, um projeto coletivo originalíssimo em que três escritoras divergem, ao mesmo tempo que trocam generosamente de maneiras de ser e de escrever"--Page 4 of cover.

"Maria Isabel Barreno, Maria Teresa Horta and Maria Velho da Costa wrote Novas Cartas Portuguesas, one of the most indecorous works of Portuguese literature, as innovative as it is necessary in a particularly torpid historical-cultural context. In it, the three writers deflowered myths, dispelled gender laws and scrutinized issues in Portuguese society at the time (from the condition of Portuguese women to the Guerra Colonial). The three authors became known, nationally and internationally, as the Três Marias, but the aggregation of their names does not suppress their differences. It was, in fact, the differences between the three that led to the creation of a feminist literary work, a very original collective project in which three writers diverge, at the same time that they generously exchange their ways of being and writing."
