Conceived as a bespoke publication designed and personalised by the client, the Atlas Maior was issued in an endless variety of permutations reflecting the wishes and interests of their first owners. The contents of each permutation were selected from Visscher's available stock, and it is therefore possible that the map of Denmark, the only coloured sheet in this volume, was only available at the time of purchase in this part-coloured impression. Generally speaking, the anonymous buyer of this copy opted for a small and geographically limited variant, restricted to thirty-three maps devoted solely to Europe. They also obtained it comparatively late in the Atlas' life, certainly after 1677, when the privilege found on most maps was granted to Visscher, and probably 1694, given that Mary II, who died right at the end of the (Hollandish) year, is absent from the dedications of the English and Scottish maps to her husband and co-ruler William III. Conversely, the deaths of both William and Visscher in 1702 provide a likely terminus ante quem for its production.
Titled 'Atlas minor, sive totius Orbis Terrarum Contracta Delineatio; ex contaibus N. Visscher. Fol.' in the Catalogue of Maps, Prints, Drawings, etc., forming the geographical and topographical collection attached to the Library of his late Majesty King George the third, etc, London, 1829.
