Maria das Dores Afonso dos Santos and João Afonso dos Santos discuss their lives during World War II. Maria lived in Ermera, Timor, and her brothers were sent to Coimbra, Portugal to continue their studies. With the spread of the conflict in the Pacific and Japan's invasion of Timor, communications from Timor ceased. Maria and her parents were detained for three years in a Japanese concentration camp. In Portugal, the brothers believed they were orphaned. From the memories of Maria and João, the songs of their brother Zeca Afonso and letters and rescued photos, the film follows the saga of a family in a dramatic time in the history of Portugal. Divided into two parts, the documentary begins with interviews of Maria and João, followed by visits to the places in Timor-Leste where the family lived, the vacation village of Ermera and the concentration camp in Liquiçá.
