Brahms's third and final Piano Trio, written in C minor, was composed in the summer of 1886, a few years after the Piano Trio No. 2. The German composer was staying on the banks of Lake Thun in the Swiss Alps, likely inspired by the serenity of his surroundings to create this chamber masterwork about which Clara Schumann wrote, "No other work of Johannes has so entirely transported me; so tender is the flow of the second movement, which is wonderfully poetic. I am happier tonight than I have been for a long time." In that same spirit of tranquility and contentment, Elena Bashkirova takes the piano role alongside violin virtuoso Maxim Vengerov and acclaimed cellist Boris Pergamenschikow to recreate this beloved trio.
