1848 is the year some 250 Valaisans from the districts of Entremont and Martigny colonized Wisconsin. From the Abbet families to Vouilloz, via Luisier, Perraudin, Rausis... many fought in the Civil War and two men lost their lives there. Most were pioneers in the colonization of the American Midwest; they acquired acres of virgin forest and converted them into fertile fields to feed their families. A few stood out in particular: two emigrants served in the Wisconsin Parliament; two localities were founded by Valaisans; and a son of an emigrant became a great name in the history of American football. It is the fate of all these people that is told to you in this book. Some have been tragic, others exceptional. But all testify to the quest for a "better life". --
