Her alcoholic father forced Maria into the care of a cult leader who beat and raped her. Maria escaped to the U.S. to start anew. But difficulties learning English, a teen pregnancy, and a husband who mistreated her all stood in Maria's way of success. She refused to give in, fighting to learn the language, divorcing her husband and working her way to director of a medical practice as a single mother.
