Twenty hand-colored aquatint plates, including pictorial t.p., each accompanied by a leaf of description in letterpress.
"To exhibit correct delineations of some of the most prominent beauties of natural scenery in the United States is the object of the work of which the first number is now offered to the public. Should sufficient encouragement be received, it is intended to continue the series and to present to the public view most of those spots which are remarkable for their historical interest or natural beauty."--Introduction.
Issued in three numbers with blue printed wrappers, 1820-1821. Insufficient subscriptions prevented the publication of the additional numbers which were planned. For a detailed publishing history of this work, familiarly known as the "Landscape album," see Koke, R. A checklist of the American engravings of John Hill ... 1961, no. 37.
"J. Maxwell, printer"--wrapper. According to Koke, Hill printed his own plates while Maxwell handled the letterpress printing.
