Experiments were conducted to obtain information on heat transfer in turbulent, mixed-free- and -forced-convection flow. This flow regime has recently become important in connection with certain engineering applications such as gas turbines and jet engines. The investigation was made in a vertical tube with a length-to-diameter ratio equal to 5. The walls of the tube were heated, and air was conducted through the tube in either an upward or a downward direction. Free convection is created by gravity so that the bouyancy forces in the heated layers near the tube wall were either parallel or opposite to the direction of the forced flow.
