Electronic reproduction of materials selected from the collection of the Hawaiian Historical Society. Manuscript and rare printed materials shed light on the role Hawaii played in the China trade, and later in the whaling industry. The Sandwich Islands were a crucial part of the Old China trade, with ships stopping there en route to Canton. They later became the centre of the whaling industry in the Pacific. This selection includes account books, newspapers, broadsides, maps, visual material and rare books documenting the Hawaiian experience. There is a complete run of the Sandwich Island gazette and journal of commerce, and long runs of the temperance journal The friend, and its predecessors.
