An instrument has been constructed to measure the density of an air stream by utilizing the reduction in intensity of an undeviated beam of x-rays. This equipment has been designed for density ranges from 0.00002 to 0.0003 grams per cubic centimeter. Path-length-density products were measured within 0.00005 g/cm sq. for x-ray beam areas of 0.0005 cm sq. and averaging time of 30 seconds, and within 0.0001 g/cm sq. for beam areas of 0.008 cm sq. and averaging times of 5 minutes.
