"Official Opinions reproduces all opinions issued by the attorneys general between 1817 and 1870, except for the years 1846-1847 and 1850-1852. The only authors in this collection were either attorneys general or acting and ad interim attorneys general. The opinions are housed in bound, chronological volumes, lettered A-R, and within each volume the opinions are in roughly chronological order. In addition to covering the slave trade, this collection touches on general slavery matters; relations between the federal government and American Indians, including treaties, removal, claims, lands, and rights; private citizen and state land claims; maritime issues, including piracy, prizes, forfeitures, seizures, cargo disputes, and tariffs; federal pay and allowances; military pay, ranks, courts-martial, and pensions; boundary controversies; Civil War issues, including blockade running, the Fort Pillow massacre, and Abraham Lincoln's suspension of the writ of habeas corpus; and Reconstruction issues, including Reconstruction acts, status of former Confederate officers, and powers of legislative bodies in the former Confederacy."
