"One of the thorniest issues in the negotiations which led to democracy in South Africa was that of amnesty for human rights offenders on both sides. Clearly, there had to be an amnesty for a deal to hold and for the country to move on, but no one was too keen to be involved in forgiving serious crimes or even accepting the moral equivalence between the two sides. Yet amnesty there was. André du Toit has done an excellent and painstaking job in unravelling the complex story of how this came about, and also in illuminating the philosophical issues involved in amnesty. The result is a major contribution both to South African history, and to the theoretical basis of transitional justice." --
