The behavior of the conventional oleo-pneumatic landing gear during impact is analyzed. The applicability of the analysis to actual landing gears is established by comparing calculated results with drop-test data. In addtion to the more exact treatment, studies are made to determine the effects of variations in such parameters as the force-deflection characteristics of the tire, the orifice discharge coefficient, and the polytropic exponent for the air-compression process in the shock strut, which may not be known accurately in practical design problems. An investigation is also made to determine the extent to which representation of the system can be simplified and still yield useful results. Generalized solutions for the behavior of a simplified system, which may be useful in preliminary design, are presented for a wide range of landing-gear and impact parameters.
