In 1971, 17-year-old Franz Farkas leaves his home village of Tilliers, France for Oakland, California. Spending a year as an exchange student, the French teenager immerses himself in the Bay Area counterculture, from the music and social movements to the looming threat of the Vietnam War. He meets everyone from Black Panthers to radical feminists, bomb-makers, LSD experimenters, members of the gay and lesbian community in the Castro, Native American protesters expelled from Alcatraz, Mexican trade unionists, and children of Japanese immigrants interned during World War II. Along the way, he also manages to play a feminine role in the high school musical and fall in love. Meanwhile, back home, Franz's family faces the reality of post-de Gaulle France.
