The Dominican friar Ascelin of Lombardia was sent by Pope Innocent IV as a papal envoy to the Mongol camp at Sisan. He left Lyon in March 1245 and met with the Mongol ruler Baiju at his camp in the Arax river valley in 1247. His companion Simon of St Quentin wrote a 'History of the Mongols' which described the Mongols' conquest as well as his own observations.
