Between 1335 and 1343 Pegolotti compiled the work for which he is famous, the 'Libro di divisamenti di paesi e di misuri di mercatanzie e daltre cose bisognevoli di sapere a mercatanti', commonly known as 'La Pratica della mercatura'. This included descriptions of trade routes including the one from Azov via Astrakhan, Khiva, Otrar and Kulja to Beijing and the route from Ayas on the coast of Turkey via Sivas, Erzingan and Erzerum to Tabriz in Persia. He also describes the major trading cities known to Italian merchants and his work, different commodities such as cloth, spices, gold and silver coin, weights, measures and currencies. Pegolotti's 'Pratica della mercatura' was first published in 1766 by Giovanni Francesco Pagnini as part of 'Della Decima', his history of the finances of Florence.
