Clavijo travelled from Cadiz to the court of Tamerlane (or Timur) in Samarkand between 1403 and 1406 as an ambassador of Henry III of Castile. He wrote a long narrative of the journey describing the cities and countries he passed through. He set off from Cadiz and travelled via Sicily, Rhodes, Constantinople, Trebizond, Armenia and Persia. His writings were published in Spanish in 1582 as 'Embajada a Tamor LƯn' and in English in 1859 as a 'Narrative of the Embassy of Ruy Gonzalez de Clavijo to the Court of Timour at Samarcand AD 1403-6'.
