Trial of John H. Phelps for the murder of his wife, Eliza. The counsels for the defendant "contended that the prisoner was insane when he killed his wife, and therefore was not guilty of murder" but the jury found Phelps guilty and the court sentenced him to be hung on Jan. 19, 1855. Phelps received at least three reprieves from the governor and it has not been determined whether the execution actually took place.
