Interest in Japan, its history and culture, was widespread at the turn of the century. A book on the life of its women was thus quite in order, and this study translated by Annemarie Heinck, discusses the contemporary Japanese woman as to her education as a child, her separation from men, her marriage, her possible divorce, her duties, her treatment of servants, and her weaknesses. Two appendices detail the changes brought about by the arrival of Commodore Perry in 1853 and the legal grounds for divorce.
